Yesterday, 29th April 2020, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, commissioned the NITDA Training and Research Academy, a Virtual Learning Academy for Nigerians.
The virtual event held on the Microsoft Teams Platform, and according to Pantami, the first of its kind event in Nigeria follows the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to empower citizens with digital skills in line with the country’s efforts to digitalize the economy.
This is very timely, considering the fact that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have had to shift focus to the digital domain in order to keep the country’s economy alive.
“We have leveraged on existing technologies, in line with our mandate, to provide the requisite training needed to put Nigeria on a globally competitive pedestal in spite of the pandemic to ensure that Nigerians are ready for a post-COVID-19 digital era,” Pantami said in his keynote address at the virtual event.
He also encouraged Nigerians nationwide, particularly Civil Servants and students to key into the opportunity and develop digital skills especially as the current lockdown currently affords us the time.
“This virtual learning platform was conceptualized and executed during this lockdown with the help of our partners: Cisco, Huawei, Microsoft, and Oracle; they played a key role in making this initiative a reality.
“…The Minister had directed us at NITDA and other agencies under his supervision to key into the initiative on digital literacy and digital job creation and how to empower our citizens and prepare them for a digital world and post COVID-19 world,” He said.
