Facebook Gets its Desired Attention Amidst the COVID-19 Outbreak


Facebook’s business is suffering from heavy traffics, most especially in countries where the disease have a massive impact on citizens and businesses alike

With countries and businesses implementing work from home policy, streaming services, and Steam, self-isolation, and quarantine, Facebook messaging traffic in some countries has increased by 50 percent. Video calls on Messager and Whatsapp have also doubled.

In Italy where 6,000 people are recorded to have been dead from the COVID-19, it was discovered that the time spent on Instagram has increased by 70%.

Speaking on this, VP of Analytics, Alex Schultz said, “We don’t monetize many of the services where we’re seeing increased engagement, and we’ve seen a weakening in our ads business in countries taking aggressive actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

The company said the increase in usage has become challenging as its staff work from home, however, it has kept the apps working smoothly. “We’re monitoring usage patterns carefully, making our systems more efficient, and adding capacity as required,” the company said.

To help lighten the load, the company has decided to reduce bit rates (the number of bits per second) on Facebook and Instagram videos in certain regions.
