The world anticipated Mobile World Congress (MWC), has been canceled because of the widespread of the coronavirus
This was disclosed by the chief executive officer of conference organizer GSMA in a statement, “The global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern, and other circumstances, make it impossible.”
The event was canceled as a result of the virus which got a lot of tech giants, such as Amazon, Lenovo, Sony, LG, ZTE, Nvidia, Ericsson to pull out few days to the event
This came as a shock to everyone as it has never happened in the 33-year history of the event. The event is known for drawing over 100,000 participants globally who are interested in knowing the latest technology.
The downfall of the event started when Swedish wireless equipment maker, Ericsson AB pulled out on the 7th of February, just seventeen days to the event. According to Ericsson AB, the event could not ensure the safety of its staff members and customers who will be attending the MWC.
Not long after, Sony also pulled out, which gave the other tech giants the opportunity to pull out of the event as well.
In a report by Bloomberg, due to the tech companies turning their backs on the event, the organizers of the event said they might cancel it after a meeting of members. As of Tuesday the 12th of February, 1,113 people have died from the disease, while 44,653 cases have been confirmed on the mainland.
The event was meant to take place from Feb. 24 to Feb. 27. GSMA has however introduced preventive measures to reassure visitors, such as advising against handshakes, introducing body temperature scanners and a protocol for changing microphones, and restricting entry to recent arrivals from China.
It would be recalled that before the cancelation of the event, The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) who is in charge of organizing the MWC speaking on the measures they are taking against the virus said no traveler to China will be allowed access to the event’s venue and anyone who has visited the country will have to prove that they have been out of the country 14 days prior to the outbreak of the virus.
