“Racism is permitted on Reddit” says CEO.
Steve Huffman the CEO of Reddit is trying to clarify his very radical stanch toward the fundamental human right of expression on his platform.
This has however caught him at a very crucial position, because Huffman reply to a straightforward question about his company’s policy about hate speech has led him to attack race, religion, or another protected sensitive class of discussion in his reply.
A Reddit user chlomyster had asked the CEO to make the clarification if open racism was now against the company’s policy and he had responded that:
On Reddit, the way in which we think about speech is to separate behavior from beliefs. This means on Reddit there will be people with beliefs different from your own, sometimes extremely so. When users actions conflict with our content policies, we take action.”
Our approach to governance is that communities can set appropriate standards around language for themselves. Many communities have rules around speech that are more restrictive than our own, and we fully support those rules.
Not to say the least that Reddit has been making to keep its platform free from several forms of violence and all, but when it comes to raw open speech, Huffman seems a lot permissive to this approach of expression on his platform.
