Xiaomi may be rolling out a device that will feature a camera sensor up to 108 MP, definitely the first of its kind, assuming it doesn’t slack on the plan
The Chinese phone maker sometimes during the course of last week flaunted the possibility of rolling out a device with 108 MP camera sensor, and it did in collaboration with another mobile giant, Samsung. Xiaomi in its tweet told that the public should expect ‘two big pieces of news from Xiaomi’s images of the future conference; one of which include its partnership with Samsung electronics in offering ultra-high-resolution cameras’.
This just in! Two big pieces of news from Xiaomi's Images of the Future Conference:

Now, in line with its previous announcement, the Korean manufacturer has unveiled the sensor in question, called the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX. Samsung confirmed that the new sensor has 0.8-micron pixels or photo-sites — the same size as current 48 MP, and 64MP cameras. The sensor also uses pixel-binning to deliver shots that are comparable to a 27MP 1.6-micron pixel camera.
GSM Authority informed that Samsung is able to maintain the same pixel size as 48MP and 64MP sensors due to the 1/1.33-inch sensor size employed by the 108MP camera sensor. This sensor is, therefore, larger than Samsung’s 64MP GW-1 (1/1.72-inch) and 48MP cameras (1/2-inch).”
According to the Korean manufacturer, the sensor also comes with Smart ISO technology, and at that, will be capable of shooting 6K video (6,016 x 3,384) at 30fps. In case you don’t know, the ISO tech is a mechanism that selects the level of amplifier gains according to the illumination and switched to a low ISO to “improve the pixel saturation and produce vivid photographs”. That been said, will don’t know how exactly the new ISO tech will function, especially compared to the current sensor technologies, however, I guess we’ll find out when the mammoth unit makes it to an actual phone.
Samsung says mass production of the ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor begins later this month. This suggests we could see a 108MP phone before the end of the year. In fact, it’s rumored that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be the first device to pack Samsung’s new sensor. At that mass production of the devices is expected to commence sometimes towards the end of this month.
