YouTube is planning to launch a feed of short videos called “Shorts” by the end of 2020. This new feature is set to compete with the existing viral platform, TikTok
TikTok is a feed of very short videos that serve as alternatives to vlogs and clips. The app was launched in 2017 and has recorded a download of close to 2 billion worldwide. In just two years, TikTok has gained so much popularity as a Launchpad for memes and the Generation Z culture.
So far, there’s been no strong competition for TikTok and this is probably a reason for YouTube to feel the need to create one.
According to reports, the Shorts feature is likely to imitate TikTok by also having a feed of short videos. The added advantage is the fact that the feature will be on the YouTube mobile app. This means that users would not have to download an entirely different app to enjoy this feature, hence reaching over two billion global YouTube users.
Also, users would enjoy using YouTube’s licensed music and songs as soundtracks for their videos. Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time YouTube will be mirroring a feature on social media platforms. The video-sharing company had earlier adopted the Stories feature on Instagram and Snapchat.
The question is, will YouTube’s Short be able to pose a serious threat to Tik Tok? Well, we would find out when the feature is officially launched.
In the meantime, it is a breath of relief that the people can have something new to try whilst they also make their decision of which app is their most preferred.
