One of the benefits of using virtual reality (VR) is that it helps the user feel like they are actually there due to its immersive nature of technology, which is handy when it comes to games. We’ve all seen those videos of people freaking out while experiencing VR due to how real it feels.
Now, it seems like YouTube and National Geographic want to leverage the technology and its immersive nature as both companies have announced that they’ll be teaming up for a series of VR projects. According to Jenna Pirog, National Geographic’s senior director of video and immersive experiences,
National Geographic has always pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling. We’re looking forward to a long-term partnership with YouTube that will allow us to remain industry stewards for marrying immersive technology with impactful storytelling.
There will be three projects in the works, with the first dubbed The Okavango Experience, where it will take users on an expedition of Africa’s Okavango Delta. It will be a four-part series which will follow the Nat Geo society team through a 1,500 mile trip of the Delta as they try to understand how to protect the rivers in the region.
Each episode is expected to run for about 5 minutes, where the first episode will be made available on the National Geographic’s YouTube channel, website and the Google Daydream VR app starting on the 11th of December.
